Futuna Blue España SL has cultured successfully bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), raising the company hopes to reach industrial production levels soon.
In concrete, the Futuna technical team has succeeded the weaning of thousands of bluefin tuna. The success of this experience is not only the quantity of fingerlings produced, it is also quite important the quality of the fishes produced. Healthy fishes have been obtained, with a good swimming behaviour and biometric development.
The bluefin tuna is considered in the fishing limit and the aquaculture can help to recover the wild population. From this point of view, the strong Futuna commitment in terms of research and development is clear. One example is the Futuna participation in research projects as Transdott, within the Seventh Framework Program of the EU.
The next Futuna challenge is, beside to improve the number of fingerlings produced, to transport fingerlings to sea cages. We hope this to be possible during the 2014 season.
